The Game Modifier takes an existing game and modifies it to emphasise a specific tactical focus. Based on game-based teaching approaches like Game Sense and Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU), it helps you shape games to develop tactical awareness alongside skill.
Game Name (required) — The game to modify (e.g. "4v4 Soccer", "Handball", "Tag").
Current Setup/Rules — Describe how you currently run the game.
Tactical Focus (required) — Choose from: Creating/Using Space, Decision Making, Support Play, Defensive Positioning, Transition (Attack/Defence), Ball Movement, Communication, or Timing & Anticipation.
Grade Level (required) — Target age group.
Number of Players — How many students will play.
Available Equipment — What you have available.
Space Available — Playing area description.
A modified version of your game that includes:
Specific rule modifications to highlight the tactical focus
Explanation of why each modification develops the chosen tactic
Key questions to ask students during play
Progressions to increase tactical complexity
Teaching points for the tactical focus
Start with a simple, well-known game and modify it — students learn better when the base game is familiar.
Try different tactical focuses for the same game to create a progression across lessons.
Use the key questions during "freeze" moments in gameplay to develop tactical thinking.
This tool is especially powerful for Game Sense and TGfU teaching approaches.
